Being a designer and a business owner, I have to manage every part of the business, including PR outreach. I try my best to dedicate a few days in a month to just focus on researching outreach through cold calls, emails and various networking outlets but always keeping my target market in mind. I end up doing 20-30 emails or cold calls a week.
This is how I came across, Stephanie Hollman of the Real Housewives of Dallas. She seemed to be the perfect muse for LIZNA and I reached out to her assistant who was so kind and arranged a private fitting with Stephanie. Both Stephanie and her assistant were ecstatic to support a local designer and it was a win-win situation for me.
I was extremely intimidated to meet her in person but Stephanie was completely normal and just as real as she is on the show. The experience gave me confidence as a designer because every garment fit her perfectly and when she wore the Effy Dress on set, I received many compliments and inquiries. It was surreal to see one of my garments on television on the perfect muse and I felt more motivated than ever.
I would advise for emerging designers like myself to really do research and think about who your perfect brand ambassador and muse are. Go out of your comfort zone and reach out to your ideal muses, do some PR outreach yourself, and network as much as possible. The worst that can happen is nothing or they say no. It doesn't always work but when it does, it is truly rewarding. You just have to keep going!
