As multitaskers and care-givers, it was important to this sister design duo to have sleepwear that is comfortable, breathable and stylish. Sleep Sassy™ was founded by sisters Donna and Deborah who had a desire to coordinate sleepwear/loungewear with matching satin lined bonnets. It was a Saturday morning breakfast time, when  Deborah couldn’t help but notice the tattered green babydoll nighty and the frayed brown satin bonnet Donna was wearing.  Appalled, Deborah exclaimed “what are you wearing? you look like a hot mess!”

Donna and Deborah of Sleep Sassy

Two weeks later, Donna had stitched together a matching pajama and bonnet set and the rest, as they say, is history…in the making!  Today we chat with Deborah and Donna about how the ultimate clap back resulted in a new approach to sleepwear and hair-care.

How and why did you start designing?

Donna: I decided to learn more about designing in 2018 when I couldn't find an easy way to match my head scarfs and bonnets with my sleepwear. I wanted to put the same energy into what I wore to bed as I did when dressing for the workday or going out on the town. I learned to sew and make clothes at the age of 10 years old and made some of my own clothes in high school. I also taught my younger sister to sew as well. I've always enjoyed being a little different and wearing things that no one else had.

What inspired you to create this product? What was the need you saw?

Donna: I was inspired by my sister, Deborah, who one day bluntly told me that I looked really bad with the miss-matched colors of my nightgown and bonnet - as only a sister can. Like most women of color, I learned at a young age how to protect my hair from damage when sleeping, by wearing a scarf or bonnet.  I saw a need for sleepwear which felt comfortable, cohesive and coordinated.

What is your design philosophy?

Our design philosophy focuses on comfort, style and being size inclusive. Our mission is to provide our customers with cute, comfortable, coordinated sleepwear they won’t mind being seen wearing, including a matching bonnet to protect their tresses.

How has your design changed over time?

Although both my sister and I have worked from home for years, the past year has highlighted the need to include fabric designs that could be worn not only for sleeping, but could also be worn during virtual meetings (and no one would be the wiser).

Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?

My sister and I are very different when it comes to colors and patterns.  I find my inspiration in bold multi-colored designs and my sister helps keep it balanced with simple colors and minimalist designs.

Any tips and tricks you've picked up on the way?

I feel like we are still learning and growing. As women of a certain age, we are comfortable asking questions and being willing to explore various options.

What is your brand aesthetic and what makes your brand unique?

Our brand aesthetic is about coordination and providing a way to feel stylish and sassy in our sleepwear. Our brand is unique because there aren't many sleepwear brands that include a way to protect your hair while sleeping. Our matching satin lined bonnets are the icing on the cake.

Our dream is to one day see our sleepwear and matching bonnets worn by actresses on TV and the big screen.
